Paramount Global is laying off hundreds of employees, just one day after the company announced CBS had record Super Bowl viewership, Chief Executive Officer Bob Bakish said Tuesday in an internal memo to employees.

Paramount will lay off about 800 people, or an estimated 3% of its workforce, according to a person familiar with the matter. Paramount Global ended 2022 with about 24,500 full-time and part-time employees.

Affected workers will be notified Tuesday, Bakish said in the note.

“These adjustments will help enable us to build on our momentum and execute our strategic vision for the year ahead — and I firmly believe we have much to be excited about,” Bakish wrote in the note.

Paramount shares fell about 4% in morning trading Tuesday.

Deadline first reported the number of cuts in January.

Paramount Global owns a variety of assets including CBS, Paramount Pictures, Pluto TV, Paramount+ and cable networks including Nickelodeon, BET and Comedy Central. The job cuts come as the media company considers merger and acquisition options. Paramount Global has held early merger talks with Skydance Media and Warner Bros. Discovery in recent months, CNBC has previously reported.

The media company had warned employees of impending cuts in a Jan. 25 internal memo. Bakish said at the time that Paramount Global needs to “operate as a leaner company and spend less.”

Its Paramount+ streaming service continues to lose money each quarter. The platform lost $238 million in the third quarter. The company reports fourth-quarter earnings Feb. 28.

Blowout Super Bowl

Super Bowl 58 on CBS was the most-watched television show in history, with an estimated 123.4 million people having watched across all platforms.

CBS charged a record high average $6.5 million for every 30-second advertisement for the Super Bowl, according to the research company Guideline.

The network earned tens of millions in additional revenue because the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers went into overtime.

Elderly Alaska man is first reported person to die of recently discovered Alaskapox virus

0

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — An elderly man has died from Alaskapox, the first known fatality from the recently discovered virus, state health officials said.

The man, who lived in the remote Kenai Peninsula, was hospitalized last November and died in late January, according to a bulletin last week from Alaska public health officials.

The man was undergoing cancer treatment and had a suppressed immune system because of the drugs, which may have contributed to the severity of his illness, the bulletin said. It described him as elderly but didn’t provide his age.

Alaskapox, also known as AKPV, is related to smallpox, cowpox and mpox, health officials said. Symptoms can include a rash, swollen lymph nodes and joint or muscle pain.

Only six other cases of the virus have been reported to Alaska health officials since the first one in 2015. All involved people were living in the Fairbanks area, more than 300 miles (483 kilometers) from the Kenai Peninsula, health officials said.

All had mild cases and recovered without being hospitalized.

The man who died “resided alone in a forested area and reported no recent travel and no close contacts with recent travel, illness, or similar lesions,” the health bulletin said.

It’s unclear how AKPV is transmitted but researchers say it may be zoonotic, meaning it can jump from animals to humans. The bulletin said that tests found evidence of current or previous infection in several species of small mammals in the Fairbanks area, including red-backed voles, and at least one domestic pet.

The man said he had cared for a stray cat at his home, the bulletin said.

The cat tested negative for the virus but it “regularly hunted small mammals and frequently scratched the patient,” the bulletin said.

That opens the possibility that the cat had the virus on its claws when it scratched him. The bulletin said a “notable” scratch near the armpit area where the first symptom — a red lesion — was noted.

Health officials said there hasn’t been any documented cases of humans passing on the virus but they recommended people with skin lesions possibly caused by Alaskapox to cover the affected area with a bandage.”

Other suggestions are thoroughly washing hands, avoid sharing clothing that might have touched the lesions and to launder clothing and sheets separately from other household items.

Health authorities also urged Alaskans to follow federal health precautions when around wildlife to avoid potential Alaskapox infections.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends washing hands with soap and water after contacting wild animals or their feces. Hunters should always wear gloves when handling dead animals, even if they are freshly killed, the agency suggests.

European Union is considering sanctions on Chinese firms for aiding Russia’s war machine

The European Union is looking to sanction Chinese firms that it believes have helped Russia circumvent Western penalties, looking to slap measures against these mainland China businesses for the first time since the war began, three EU officials told CNBC.

The 27-member bloc is working on a 13th package of sanctions in the wake of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which could be ready later this month to mark the second-year anniversary of the war.

One of the EU officials, who did not want to be named due to the sensitive nature of the talks, said: “Chinese companies and entities from other third countries, which are involved in supporting Russia to circumvent sanctions” will feature in the next round of measures levied against Russia for its war in Ukraine.

Another official said that the 27 EU ambassadors will discuss the proposal at a meeting on Wednesday, adding that “work is ongoing.”

The comments come after a report from Bloomberg said the sanctions proposal includes three companies based in China.

European officials have previously underlined the close relationship between Moscow and Beijing. Last month, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said at the World Economic Forum in Davos that “Russia’s failure is also economic. Sanctions have decoupled its economy from modern technology and innovation. Russia is now dependent on China.”

Data from China’s General Administration of Customs released in January showed that China’s trade relationship with Russia hit a new record high of $240 billion in 2023, according to Reuters. The figures showed increases in Russia’s purchases of Chinese cars and smartphones.

CNBC reported in January that Russia is still obtaining Western technology despite ongoing sanctions. China, Hong Kong, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates have been increasingly important in funneling critical components to Russia from western countries, according to the research.

Jim Nantz and Tony Romo finally get a great game in their 3rd Super Bowl for CBS

0

The first two Super Bowls that Jim Nantz and Tony Romo worked together for CBS lacked drama.

Now, both get to say they broadcast one of the best finishes in the game’s history.

“What a thrill to be able to say that we witnessed an overtime Super Bowl game and what will go down in history as one of the greatest games of all time and the longest Super Bowl game of all time. That’s what I’m trying to process right now,” Nantz said after the Kansas City Chiefs 25-22 overtime victory over the San Francisco 49ers. “I’m thrilled for our team and thrilled for the sport. It was an unbelievably fitting finish to a remarkable season.”

Nantz and producer Jim Rikhoff immediately felt they could be in store for the second overtime game in Super Bowl history after San Francisco kicker Jake Moody had his extra point blocked early in the fourth quarter, which kept it at 16-13 lead.

That set the stage for Kansas City to come back twice — first to tie it in regulation and then win in overtime when Patrick Mahomes threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman to make the Chiefs the first repeat winner in 19 years. The game-winning TD was punctuated by Nantz saying, “Jackpot, Kansas City.”

Nantz and Romo have had many great finishes in the playoffs since teaming up together in 2016, but their first two Super Bowls were duds. They had New England’s 13-3 victory over the Los Angeles Rams in 2019 and Tampa Bay’s 31-9 rout of Kansas City two years later.

And even though San Francisco had a 10-3 lead in an underwhelming first half, Nantz was hopeful that the action would pick up in the second half.

“I felt like there were going to be adjustments. Mahomes had to keep answering all these situations and scenarios. This type of game is what legends are made of,” Nantz said. “If tension is the meter and the barometer of excitement and suspense, this one is up there in record territory.”

Despite the high stakes in overtime, Nantz and Romo did not get overwhelmed in the moment. Nantz routinely let fans know that San Francisco was playing for a sixth Lombardi trophy, which would have tied New England for the most, and Kansas City was trying to repeat, there were also reminders about the postseason overtime rules, where both teams each got a possession.

Coincidentally, Nantz and Romo had the Buffalo-Kansas City AFC divisional round game two years ago, where the Chiefs won the toss and scored on the opening possession of OT without the Bills getting the ball that mandated the changes.

“You keep resetting for the audience, but other than that, you’re lost in a bubble,” Nantz said. “In terms of just the concentration and the focus level, it’s why you do so many games. During the season, you have a routine and a team that’s working in concert together. I’m proud of our team. Sure, there was excitement, but you try to have the perfect tone. And also try not to get in the way because the pictures and the visuals were telling a pretty full story on its own.”

Rikhoff and director Mike Arnold complemented the coverage in the booth by quickly showing the freak Achilles injury to 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw as he ran on the field during the first half. With 165 cameras at their disposal, CBS also had reverse angle views of Jauan Jennings’ TD pass to Christian McCaffrey in the first half and Travis Kelce’s 22-yard gain late in regulation to set up the tying field goal.

They also updated fans about San Francisco George Kittle going into the locker room during overtime with a shoulder injury but quickly returning to the field.

“You don’t change anything in overtime. The nice thing is most of the advertising obligations are out of the way, so sometimes it’s just pure coverage, which I love, and we were able to do that,” Rikhoff said. “You can stay on the field. We were able to capture a lot of really cool moments in overtime, which was nice.”

The game also marked a fitting sendoff for CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus, who will retire in April after the Masters. McManus was the driving force behind the network’s reacquisition of NFL rights in 1998. CBS did not have games from 1994 through 1997 after Fox got the NFC package in 1993.

This was CBS’ ninth Super Bowl with McManus in charge. Nantz acknowledged McManus’ retirement late in the third quarter.

“The first half, I thought maybe this is not going to be as compelling as we would like, but that second half and the overtime, it doesn’t get any better than that,” McManus said. “Jim and Tony up at the booth deserved an exciting Super Bowl. They stepped up big time and did a stellar job.”

When Nielsen releases the ratings Monday afternoon, it should go down as the most-watched Super Bowl, surpassing the 115.1 million for the Kansas City’ 38-35 victory over Philadelphia a year ago on Fox.

Biogen revenue and profit shrink on Aduhelm costs, slumping sales of multiple sclerosis therapies

Biogen on Tuesday reported fourth-quarter revenue and profit that shrank from a year ago, as it recorded charges related to dropping its controversial Alzheimer’s drug Aduhelm and as sales slumped in its multiple sclerosis therapies, the company’s biggest drug category.

Biogen booked sales of $2.39 billion for the quarter, down 6% from the same period a year ago. Revenue from multiple sclerosis products fell 8% to $1.17 billion as the therapies face competition from cheaper generics.

Biogen reported net income of $249.7 billion, or $1.71 per share, for the fourth quarter. That compares with net income of $550.4 billion, or $3.79 per share, for the same period a year ago. Adjusting for one-time items, the company reported $2.95 per share.

The drugmaker’s fourth-quarter earnings per share, both unadjusted and adjusted, saw a negative impact of 35 cents associated with previously disclosed costs of pulling Aduhelm, which had a polarizing approval and rollout in the U.S.

Biogen is cutting costs while pinning its hopes on its other Alzheimer’s drugs, including its closely watched treatment Leqembi, and other newly launched products to replace declining revenue from its multiple sclerosis therapies.

Here’s what Biogen reported for the fourth quarter compared with what Wall Street was expecting, based on a survey of analysts by LSEG:

  • Earnings per share: $2.95 adjusted vs. $3.18 expected
  • Revenue: $2.39 billion vs. $2.47 billion expected

Also on Tuesday, Biogen issued full-year 2024 guidance that calls for adjusted earnings of $15 to $16 per share. Analysts surveyed by LSEG had expected full-year earnings guidance of $15.65 per share.

The drugmaker said it expects 2024 sales to decline by a low to mid-single digit percentage compared to last year. But the company expects its pharmaceutical revenue, which includes product revenue and its 50% share of Leqembi sales, to be flat this year compared to 2023.

The results come amid the rollout of Biogen and Eisai’s Leqembi, which became the first drug found to slow the progression of the disease to win approval in the U.S. last year.

Eisai, which reported earnings last week, recorded $7 million in fourth-quarter revenue from Leqembi.

Biogen CEO Christopher Viehbacher told reporters on a media call Tuesday that there are around 2,000 patients currently on Leqembi. That makes Biogen’s target of 10,000 patients by the end of March 2024 look increasingly difficult to hit, but Viehbacher emphasized that the company is focused more on the long-term reach of Leqembi rather than meeting that benchmark.

“I think what’s important is we are now making progress,” he told reporters. “The 10,000 isn’t really hard and I think we are now really focusing on commercial plans — how do we get to the next 100,000?”

Notably, the low rate of adoption isn’t due to lack of demand: There are some 8,000 U.S. patients currently waiting to get on treatment, executives from Eisai said on an earnings call last week.

The companies are also working toward Food and Drug Administration approval of an injectable version of Leqembi, which showed promising initial results in a clinical trial in October.

Leqembi is currently administered twice monthly through the veins, a method known as intravenous infusion. The injectable form would be a new and more convenient option for administering the antibody treatment to patients, which could pave the way for higher uptake.

But investors also have their eyes on other newly launched drugs.

That includes Skyclarys from Biogen’s $7.3 billion acquisition of Reata Pharmaceuticals in July.

The FDA cleared Skyclarys last year, making it the first approved treatment for Friedreich ataxia, a rare inherited degenerative disease that can impair walking and coordination in children as young as 5.

On Monday, EU regulators approved Skyclarys for the treatment of Friedreich ataxia in patients ages 16 and up.

Biogen will hold an earnings call at 8:00 a.m. ET.

Restaurant Brands International reported quarterly earnings and revenue that beat analysts’ expectations on Tuesday, fueled by stronger-than-expected Tim Hortons sales.

Shares of the company were unchanged in premarket trading.

Here’s what the company reported compared with what Wall Street was expecting, based on a survey of analysts by LSEG, formerly known as Refinitiv:

  • Earnings per share: 75 cents adjusted vs. 73 cents expected
  • Revenue: $1.82 billion vs. $1.81 billion expected

Restaurant Brands reported fourth-quarter net income attributable to shareholders of $508 million, or $1.60 per share, up from $229 million, or 74 cents per share, a year earlier.

Excluding items, the company earned 75 cents per share.

Net sales rose 8% to $1.82 billion.

This quarter marks the first time that Restaurant Brands shared its results using its new reporting structure. The company now discloses the results for its individual brands in the U.S. and Canada and lumps all of its international locations together under its “international” segment.

Tim Hortons’ same-store sales increased 8.4% in the quarter, topping StreetAccount estimates of 4.7%. The Canadian coffee chain is typically the biggest contributor to Restaurant Brands’ revenue. While best known for its hot coffee and breakfast food, Tims continued to grow sales of its cold drinks and afternoon snacks, Restaurant Brands CEO Josh Kobza told CNBC.

Burger King reported same-store sales growth of 6.3%. The chain’s U.S. business is now more than a year into a turnaround plan that includes remodeling restaurants and spending more money on advertising. Burger King’s U.S. locations saw traffic growth for the quarter, one sign that the strategy is working.

“That’s something we haven’t seen for a while and is different from where a lot of of our competitors were, so that was a big highlight for me in the quarter,” Kobza said.

Burger King U.S. President Tom Curtis told CNBC that the consumer was resilient in the fourth quarter, but still interested in good deals.

“I think, for us, that was probably one of the reasons behind our relative success in Q4 with the Royal Crispy Wraps,” he said.

Restaurant Brands also recently acquired Burger King’s largest U.S. franchisee, Carrols Restaurant Group, in a $1 billion deal to help the chain renovate locations even faster.

Popeyes’ same-store sales grew 5.5% in the quarter. The fried chicken chain launched chicken wings as a permanent menu item during the period. The wings were the focus of Popeyes’ first-ever Super Bowl commercial, which aired during the game Sunday.

Restaurant Brands reported international same-store sales growth of 4.6%.

Plane lands safely after door falls off mid-flight

A small plane carrying two people has landed safely after losing a door mid-flight over a public park, according to police.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:00 p.m. when officials at the Cheektowaga Police and Fire Dispatch received a call for assistance from the Buffalo International Airport in New York.

“A small plane carrying two people reported losing a door to the plane while flying over the area of Stiglmeier Park in Cheektowaga,” Cheektowaga Police Department said in a statement released to the public describing the mid-air incident. “The plane is reported to have landed safely.”

Officers subsequently searched the area where the door fell off but have, so far, been unable to locate it. No one reported any damage or injuries in the aftermath of the incident.

No one has reported any property damage or injuries as a result of the incident, police said.

Officials did not say what could have caused the door to fall from the plane but the investigation into the incident is currently ongoing.

Super Bowl LVIII was most-watched television show ever with 123 million viewers

Super Bowl LVIII was the most-watched television show in history, as an estimated 123.4 million people watched the Kansas City Chiefs rally in overtime to defeat the San Francisco 49ers.

CBS Sports said that figure included viewers across all platforms and was up 7% from last year’s 115.1 million average viewers, which was also the previous record.

This year’s game was the most-streamed Super Bowl in history with a record audience on Paramount+, the network said. It added that the network saw its best postseason viewership since 1998.

Sunday’s big game had a lot for audiences for tune in for — two of the best teams in the National Football League, a halftime show from Usher, wacky commercials and, of course, a very public love story.

Those who tuned in just for the Super Bowl’s iconic slate of commercials saw a lot of snack ads for brands like Oreo, Pringles, Mountain Dew, Doritos and M&Ms. There were also plenty of celebrities endorsements from the likes of Christopher Walken, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Tom Brady, Beyoncé, Quinta Brunson, Jenna Ortega, Kate McKinnon and Jennifer Aniston.

The NFL has enjoyed strong viewership throughout this year’s playoffs. Late last month, the Chiefs beats the Baltimore Ravens in the most watched AFC Championship game ever.

Live sports has showed strength even as TV viewership has fragmented and moved to streaming platforms. The value of sports rights showed this month as Disney’s ESPN, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery said they would launch a joint steaming platform later this year. ESPN later announced it would release its own streaming service in 2025.
