A Turkish Cypriot official says a fire at a military depot has set off explosions that forced the evacuation of a nearby village but caused no fatalities.
The foreign minister of the breakaway Turkish Cypriot state posted on his official Facebook account that the fire that broke out early Thursday has been contained, but electricity has been cut to the area 6 kilometers (4 miles) east of Kyrenia.
Kudret Ozersay said some people suffered cuts from shattered windows. Turkish Cypriot media reported that some tourists staying at a nearby hotel were treated for minor injuries
Cyprus was split in 1974 when Turkey invaded following a coup by supporters of union with Greece. Turkey keeps more than 35,000 troops in the north.
